RHS Gallaudet Academic Bowl Team Lunches with the Cerfs

Dr. Vinton and Sigrid Cerf (seated) and the members and coaches of the 2013 Rockville High School Gallaudet University Academic Bowl Team, May 2013.

MCAHIC was honored and thrilled to have been able to arrange for a luncheon recently between Dr. Vinton Cerf and his wife, Sigrid, and the members and coaches of the Rockville High School Gallaudet Academic Bowl team.

Dr. Cerf, considered one of the "fathers of the internet," is currently a vice president and chief internet evangelist at Google, Inc. He has won countless awards and honors, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and is the inventor of the first commercially-available email program and other communication tools of particular benefit to people with a hearing loss. Born with a bilateral hearing loss, Dr. Cerf is a living testament that a hearing impairment is no excuse for not acheiving greatness in life.

Sigrid Cerf lost most of her hearing at age 3 after contracting spinal meningitis. After 50 years of living with a hearing loss, she is a recipient of a Cochlear implant and is a strong advocate for the benefits of CI and other assistive technologies for the hearing impaired.

The RHS Academic Bowl team placed third in the Midwest Regionals of the tournament, and tied for fifth at the national competition. MCAHIC is a proud supporter of the team.

Members of the team asked the Cerfs a number of questions about the internet and its future and about their experiences in dealing with a hearing loss in a hearing world. Dr. Cerf also demonstrated the new Google Glass to the team.
